Calling all Environmental Justice Advocates, Survivors, Feminist Killjoys, Status Quo Disruptors, John Muir-Haters, and Nature Sluts/Freaks/Geeks

It's time to bite the apple.

Rape culture has always been the bedrock of outdoor recreation, but we can simultaneously call that out and build something else that nourishes those of us who yearn for a different world.

From the platforming of rape apologists, to glorifying abusive, toxic masculine men, and stretching back to the ways in which mountaineering was born out of imperialistic motivations for possession, power, and control, it's time to disrupt the outdoor industry's "business as usual."

Inspired by the articles, "Ambient Dominion," and "Himpathy for the Devil," the Terra Collective space is dedicated to challenging the ways in which the mistreatment and abuse of women, trans, non-binary, two-spirit folks, as well as the Earth, is swept under the rug in favor of cis, white male hero worship.

The outdoor industry gatekeepers want us to remain silent, disempowered, and submissive. They don't want us to call them out or even in. They've learned nothing from #MeToo. They want the status quo to remain just that because it works for them. But it's never worked for us and it's beyond time we disrupt that.

This is a call to be part of a collective that pushes toxic masculinity into obsolescence.

If we want to step into a future rooted in solidarity for survivors, mutual aid, true community, Indigenous sovereignty, and reparations for Black people (because this is the only way to heal from the oppressive systems we live in) it will require tearing down the old, AND building up something new.

That's where the Terra Collective comes in.

It's time to bite the apple.

Biting the apple is a reference to Lilith, a rebellious goddess-demonness who flips traditional femininity on its head in favor of self-sovereignty. In some myths, Lilith represents the snake who meddles in the patriarchal plans and order of things. There's a theme of exile, banishment, and wildness in retellings of Lilith. In the oldest myths, Lilith is sexually free, unmarried, and not beholden to anyone but herself. She is self-sovereign.

Chani Nicholas discusses in this episode of Down to Astro how in The Alphabet of Ben Sira it's said that God created Lilith to be the mate of Adam. Adam insists that Lilith is their subordinate, but Lilith demands to be seen as an equal. Adam refuses to acknowledge their equality, God fails to stick up for her, so Lilith chooses to exile herself and says, "Bye bitch!" Because why would she want to stay with someone who won't acknowledge and see her? She's the embodiment of thriving on the margins.

In some retellings, Lilith comes back as the snake in the tree of knowledge. She encourages Eve to bite the apple and get the fuck out. Lilith warns Eve that if she doesn't take a bite she'll be repressed, contained, she won't be respected, she'll never be able to access her own erotic power, and she'll be used and abused in the system. She convinces Eve to take off the golden handcuffs leading to her being banished from the Garden of Eden too.

Lilith gets a bad wrap, but her only crime was raging against the patriarchy (or gatekeepers, if you will). To bite the apple means we reject patriarchy's brainwashing that intends to keep us divided and siloed.

You're invited to join The Terra Collective.

The Terra Collective is our new monthly membership for women, trans, femme, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender expansive folks who want to bring new narratives into being for the outdoor industry.

Whether you're a writer, artist, filmmaker, activist, thinker, creative of any kind, or someone who simply wants to collaborate and brainstorm with like-minded status quo disruptors this is the space for you!

You can cancel anytime, but those who stay inside the membership for 6 months will get the chance to collaborate on bringing our first print zine into being!

What's inside?

Each month inside the Terra Collective we'll hold one live creativity/embodiment practice workshop and drop one, pre-recorded educational video to deepen your understanding of toxic masculinity in the outdoor industry and how we can disrupt and heal from it.

There will also be one day a month for office hours where you can ask questions, get feedback on creative projects, or hang out and absorb the inspiration from all the brilliant minds in the room working to make the outdoor industry a safer and more illustrious place for all!

Are you working on a script, essay, film, a business idea, or want to launch any kind of creative endeavor? Each month you can also submit your work or idea to me (Erin) and receive personalized feedback. We can discuss the feedback in more depth in office hours!

The days and times for each workshop and office hours will be announced one month in advance so you can plan ahead!

Who is this for?

  • Activists who want to reconnect with their bodies as sources of resilience and strength, rather than just “tools for productivity,” and who value a community space to deepen that connection.

  • The girls, gays, and theys experiencing eco-anxiety, climate grief, or burnout who are looking for both practical tools and a supportive community to stay engaged.

  • Babes who use carabiners as a keychain ready to shift from feeling helpless to taking grounded, effective action without compromising their well-being and are interested in monthly Terra Collective gatherings to reinforce their progress.

  • Community-minded folks who want to understand how trauma impacts their activism and build resilience from a place of compassion and shared learning.

  • Deep feelers who often feels paralyzed by the news cycle, but you can't seem to stop scrolling.

  • Cycle breakers dedicated to disrupting intergenerational trauma patterns, but lately your inner work has felt exhausting, like it's not getting to the root, and you feel isolated

  • Self-improvement baddies skeptical of the concept of "self-improvement" who understand self-regulation and inner child work are important tools, but for true healing we need community and to come together to transform the systems we live in.

  • Therapists, Coaches, Healers, Activists, Creatives, Pilates/Yoga teachers, or Somatic Guides who yearn for a space where you can release the tension in your shoulders, relax your jaw, and be seen too

  • You're sick of that voice in your head that tells you you're not "good enough," "wise enough," experienced enough," "smart enough," "talented enough," etc.

  • This is for you if you're sick of the glazed-over, blank stares or defensiveness when you begin to explain how everything relates back to racialized capitalism and that we can't have a lush, green Earth without ridding this place of billionaires.

  • This space is for you if you're tired of feeling out there on your own navigating how to bring your creative projects to life.

  • And if the thought of mulling over ideas, politics, and how you can make a difference in the world surrounded by magic-making, beguiling, intelligent baddies is making your mouth water then ya better sign up!

The best part of joining the Terra Collective? It's like your personalized, Swiss Army knife so you can go from "omg I'm doing this alone," to "holy shit I'm in the midst of the most magnetic, spell-binding, motivated, creative babes who know it's always that deep!"

You'll never have to kick and punch the air in your kitchen ALONE ever again when you learn about a new data center being built as you sip your second cup of coffee or matcha before you will yourself to clock in to work knowing you'll have to pretend like everything is fine, normal when it's anything but. Because now you can kick and punch the air with us on a bi-monthly basis, but pair it with tangible action and strategies to resist and protest.

If you, like me, are done with the cowardice of the outdoor industry and want to commune with bold, truth-telling rebels...you're one click away from joining us and exponentially increasing your potency and power!

Who is this not for?

  • Folks who don't want to acknowledge the ways systemic oppression impacts our ability to heal, organize, and dream new futures into being

  • Quick-fix seekers who aren't willing to dive deep into personal reflection and transformation

  • Those who aren’t interested in building community and don't like the sound of participating in the monthly sessions inside the Terra Collective to integrate their learnings and ideate in community!

  • Individuals who prefer rigid, “one-size-fits-all” approaches over an adaptive, flexible "curriculum"

  • People who aren’t excited to learn new, sustainable ways to engage in their work

  • Anyone uninterested in questioning systems of power like capitalism, white supremacy, ongoing colonization, and patriarchy as part of their healing and growth journey

  • People who don't realize all the rules are made up and we can create the future we're dreaming of

  • People who aren't advocating for an immediate and swift end to the genocide in Palestine, Congo, and Sudan

If you're feeling inspired, now is the time to join because membership cost to the Terra Collective will go up to $45 at the end of this launch on the solstice, June 21, 2026.

The reason why I'm starting this membership at $25 is because I want to offer a lower entry point for founding members to show how much I appreciate you, how much it means to me that you believe in this space, and how honored I am that you want to be inside our growing community and movement.

You're absolutely still welcome to join after the Solstice, but that is when our first workshop takes place and it would be most potent to join us then. That being said, I understand timing is everything, and if right now isn't feasible for you, we'll be here whenever you can jump in. There are lots of other ways to be involved and stay connected to the Terra space, and I'll still be showing up in your inbox (if you're subscribed). So, don't sweat it if this isn't the right time for you :) you can also stay connected through the Terra Podcast and catch bonus episodes over on Patreon.

We cross-pollinate at the intersection of environmental justice, somatic healing, and feminist, anti-racist analysis. If you’re ready to shift from burnout to balance, from disconnection to community, and from exhaustion to purpose, we hope to see you inside the Terra Collective, a space for grounding, education, creative incubation, and authentic connection.

Meet the FKIC (Feminist Killjoy in Charge)!

Erin is the founder of Terra Incognita Media and a settler on the traditional and stolen lands of the Osage, Miami, and Oceti Sakowin peoples, otherwise known as St. Louis, Missouri. She is a writer, advocate, educator, and a trauma-informed mindset and embodiment coach with a background in anti-oppressive facilitation.

Erin is driven to cultivate a nourishing, supportive, survivor-centered community through her work. Her dream is to build Terra Incognita Media into a robust educational platform for folks who strive to dismantle rape culture in the outdoor industry and beyond --not rooted just in theory, but in action! (She also dreams of opening her own climbing gym co-op one day as a safer climbing space for women, femmes, two-spirit and trans folks....)

What if we told you...

...there's a collective of activist-storytellers and writers, unabashed shit-disturbers, outspoken zinesters, socially-conscious astrologers, sustainability innovators, and humans who just want to live on a habitable planet free from systems of oppression who are EAGER to share their wisdom and knowledge with you......You're more than capable of rewiring your subconscious beliefs and narratives that stem from oppressive systems, so you can contribute to rewriting and reclaiming the narrative...You possess a unique flavor of leadership that will allow you to affect change in your sphere of influence......You can take your power back from these oppressive systems that try to rob us of our agency and self-trust......There's a dazzling group of fellow feminist killjoys (who also don't believe billionaires like Yvon Chouinard should exist) who can't wait to affirm and celebrate your existence and ideas......You can access the like-minded community of anti-capitalist nature lovers (who don't have a single John Muir tattoo) that you've been dreaming of all while learning and expanding in a nourishing container alongside them...

Imagine 6 months from now: you feel in your purpose, you've gained real traction on your creative project, you're immersed in a bubbly, supportive, encouraging community, and you're inspired like never before to activate and make moves in your sphere of influence. The self-doubt has dissapeared and you can't remember what it was like to hesitate when speaking your truth. I hope to see you inside!

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve tried other courses and mindset techniques, what makes this different?

Great question. Unlike other frameworks that might just offer “mindset” shifts, the courses you receive with your membership and our live workshops integrate somatic practices, trauma-informed healing, and actionable tools to reframe your relationship with activism, your creative potency, and your sense of purpose in creating change. Our approach is holistic and transformative with a heaping dose of feminist killjoy politic because obvi.

This is where the Terra Collective really shines. This is a space for active, ongoing integration. While the courses and workshops provide a foundation of transformative knowledge and practices, it’s the Terra Collective that truly seals in the learning and healing. Imagine it as a living, breathing community practice space where insights are embodied, explored, and expanded upon within a supportive group.

We’re working with somatic practices and trauma-informed tools, the kind of resources that flourish through consistent engagement. Each session is designed to be a touchstone, grounding you in the practices and perspectives you’re learning and allowing space for questions, reflections, and personalized support.

The Terra Collective is where your journey evolves from individual exploration into a shared path of healing and action. In this space, learning becomes a reciprocal, nourishing experience, as each month we come together to support and amplify one another’s growth. This is where insights turn into habits, where resilience is cultivated, and where your activism finds deeper grounding, creating a steady foundation for both personal and collective liberation.

I’m new to feminist theory and activism. Is this space only for seasoned feminist killjoys and activists?

Absolutely not. This membership is designed for changemakers at any stage of their journey, and the Terra Collective is perfect for anyone who is just beginning their environmental justice advocate journey or for those who have been immersed in the work for years.

Each course module (from Healing Your Relationship with Land, Body, and Resource), paired with the Terra Collective's monthly workshop and office hours, are crafted to be accessible and engaging, giving you a toolkit that allows you to engage meaningfully in creative and activist work without feeling overwhelmed.

Experienced activists will find practices that deepen their understanding and rejuvenate their approach, helping to prevent burnout and reconnect them with their purpose. For those still finding their path and purpose, this space lays a solid foundation, helping you cultivate resilience, clarity, and a sense of direction.

Ultimately, this space is about nurturing your commitment to your creative potential and potency as a change maker. You'll learn how to stay grounded in somatic practices that sustain and empower you to take purposeful, aligned action for the long haul. By joining us, you’ll be welcomed into a community of learners, thinkers, feelers, and activists, where everyone’s journey is valued, and where we’re all committed to supporting each other’s growth.

I don’t feel confident about speaking up or engaging with environmental justice work, will this space help?

You better believe it. This membership is designed not just to provide knowledge but to nurture the inner resilience and confidence needed to engage meaningfully in environmental justice work. Through somatic practices, trauma-informed insights, and community support, we’ll help you connect deeply with your values and feel grounded in your body, creating a strong foundation from which to step into action and speak truth to power.

Many people feel hesitant or unsure about speaking up, especially in the face of complex issues and systemic barriers. In the course that comes with your Terra Collective members, Healing Our Relationship with Land, Body, and Resources, we’ll address this from the inside out.

You’ll learn to process your own emotions, identify and work with any fears that hold you back, and develop tools for embodied presence. This approach can help transform feelings of doubt into clarity and purpose, allowing you to show up authentically in your sphere of influence. At Terra Incognita Media, we wholeheartedly believe that we're all leaders, it just looks different from person to person.

The Terra Collective will also offer a supportive community where you can practice and explore at your own pace, free from judgment. If you stick with us for an entire year, you’ll have a toolkit of skills and a community to support you, so you can feel more confident and equipped to engage in environmental justice work in a way that allows your inherent talents, skills, and gifts to shine.

Absolutely! As long as you're mindful of the time difference and can make it work, we'd absolutely love to have you!

Will this feel like just another thing I have on my already busy schedule?

It's understandable that everything feels overwhelming right now and having two live options for connection may feel like a lot.

But sometimes we can get in the habit of isolating ourselves, especially if we've been burned by communities or group gatherings in the past.

The great news, is that you can try out the membership for a month and if you decide it's not for you just go ahead and cancel. But there's a good chance you'll stay because this space is designed to feel like a nourishing, safe(r), supportive sanctuary that you can count on and not just put your mind at ease, but even feel hopeful about the future.

You might find that this container helps you to figure out what you've got on your plate that you could let go of, or simply shift. Clarity and confidence about where to put your energy is a huge benefit of joining this collective!

I work full-time and have a family. How much time does this actually take?

Totally get it! It's as much as you want to put in! The monthly workshops are usually about 2 hours long. The office hours are 1.5 hours long. You can come to both, one, or none! The recordings will always be available to watch when you have time if you can't make it live.

What is Terra Incognita Media?

Terra Incognita Media is the brain-child of Erin Monahan, which she founded in 2015 after being sick of the rampant toxic masculinity in mainstream outdoor media.

Terra Incognita Media is a completely independent, feminist media outlet that provides a feminist response to the outdoor industry. We are supported solely by our readers who want to burn down oppressive systems and build something new just as much as we do. This is our contribution to a feminist future that is anti-patriarchal, anti-white supremacist, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist.

Our content, podcast, workshops, and events protest settler colonialism, patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy. We strive to instigate meaningful discourse that leads off the page and catalyzes political action.

We seek to raise the level and depth of discourse happening in the outdoor industry. We prioritize women, non-binary, queer, trans, and two-spirit voices in order to highlight the complexity of our relationship with natural spaces.

What is the cost?

$25 a month, or $225 a year.

If you're feeling inspired, now is the time to join because membership cost will go up to $45 at the end of this launch on the solstice, June 21, 2026. Join now and secure your founding member rate!

Are there refunds?

We get it. Finding the right fit is important, and we want you to feel truly supported on this journey. While we typically don’t offer refunds to honor our energy and work, we also understand that sometimes things just don’t align as expected. We trust that you’re making an informed choice with this investment. We ask that you deeply consider that we’re an independent, small, feminist organization and rely on these funds to sustain our platform, and the labor associated with running a membership like this. Thank you in advance for deeply considering your capacity as well as ours. If you have any concerns or questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email: heyterracollective@gmail.com

Got a question we missed?

Disclaimer!

The Terra Collective may help you to:

  • Gain tools to counteract toxic masculine, white supremacist narratives around nature, the Land, self-worth, and what it means to be resourced.

  • Deepen your understanding of how your nervous system has been brilliantly adapting to protect you, often in ways you weren’t consciously aware of. By learning ways to gently shift these responses, you’ll begin to feel more present and at ease, welcoming a new chapter of life grounded in a sense of safety and embodiment.

  • Reclaim a sense of self-worth and confidence and embrace the world through a more liberated, compassionate lens, one that allows for sustainable action and authentic, grounded advocacy.

  • Strengthen your nervous system’s ability to hold space for more joy, creativity, authenticity, and of course, conflict (because it's a human part of life) alongside the enduring work of activism. Whether your activism is outward and public or more internal and relational, this expanded capacity will empower you to engage in ways that sustain you.

  • Move toward a more intentional, liberated way of engaging with the world, where your actions reflect your values, boundaries, and aspirations.
