Have you ever wanted to interrupt bullshit, toxic behavior in your friend group or workplace, but you're afraid if it's not the "right time or place"?

Have you ever been gaslit, tone-policed, or silenced within an intimate, group, or work setting when you've tried to speak out about toxic, harmful, or violent behavior or language, and now you're second-guessing yourself and wondering if you're the problem?

We're here to stress that you're not the problem and you're not alone.

In this training and workshop you will gain in-depth knowledge about how toxic masculinity manifests in the outdoor industry, receive actionable advice about how to interrupt/disrupt toxic masculinity, develop tools for self-compassion and nervous system regulation, and leave with a grounded sense of confidence to catalyze anti-oppressive change towards gender and racial justice wherever you are within the outdoor industry, as well as your personal and professional sphere of influence.

What to Expect:

Taking place on Zoom, (you can have your camera on or off, we will mute participants during the presentation until it's time for group discussion) we will explore the manifestations of toxic masculinity in the outdoor industry by examining the history of the National Park system and the white supremacist, patriarchal sentiments littering mainstream outdoor media (writing, film, etc.). We'll even take a critical look at Transcendentalist writers because their writing influenced much of the white-washing we see today.

Throughout the workshop we'll also investigate and interrogate related themes like individualism, Himpathy, warrior complex, and Peter Pan syndrome, all of which were found in ample supply in the documentary "Free Solo."

There will be an open Q+A and facilitated group discussion at the end. We'll chat as a community, share strategies as to how to make the outdoor industry a safer space for all, brainstorm ideas, and create connections across time and space!

This workshop is based on the essay, "Ambient Dominion: How 'Free Solo' Points to an Epidemic of Toxic Masculinity." We will be taking a critical look at this film, as well as National Parks Adventure. Feel free to watch these films ahead of time if you'd like, but it's not required to participate!

You'll come to understand the truth about John Muir and his racist legacy.

At the end of the workshop...

Attendees will leave this workshop with a heightened ability to pinpoint, understand, and discern what toxic masculinity looks like in the outdoor industry, as well as learn strategies for interrupting it in real-time. Attendees will also gain valuable tools for self-care, nervous system regulation, and compassion through a somatic approach.

Workshop Outline

Part 1: The violent legacy of “Manifest Destiny,” the untold true history of the National Parks, John Muir's racist legacy, and Transcendentalist spiritual bypassing

(5 min break)

Part 2: Toxic masculinity in outdoor media: individualism, himpathy, warrior complex, and Peter Pan syndrome

(10 min break)

Part 3: How to interrupt/disrupt, as well as tools and strategies for self-care/compassion, and nervous system regulation

(5-10 min break)

Part 4: Open Q+A and facilitated discussion

Workshop Length

The workshop will take place between 11am-3pm CT. This is a half-day workshop. Please plan for about 3.5-4 hours (with plenty of breaks)! Make sure to meal plan ahead of time if you can because snacking throughout is essential, as well as staying hydrated!

Erin (she/her) is the co-founder of Terra Incognita Media, a writer, speaker, educator, trauma-informed mindset and embodiment coach, and has a background in anti-oppressive facilitation.
